An imported vehicle first receives a temporary registration – the W plate – valid for a limited time, long enough to complete the final formalities. Final registration requires the customs clearance certificate, the roadworthiness test and the NARSA file.
For a vehicle already registered in Morocco that changes owner, the procedure is called a transfer of registration and follows a similar but simpler logic.

- Take out Moroccan insurance

Pitfalls to avoid
- Letting the W plate expire: the vehicle becomes unusable and putting the situation right costs both time and money.
- Forgetting that the annual vehicle tax (vignette) is due as soon as the vehicle is registered, on top of the customs duties.
- Turning up for the roadworthiness test with a vehicle that does not meet Moroccan standards - lights, tinted windows, equipment.
- Buying a second-hand vehicle without checking that the registration certificate is free of any charge.

Its duration is limited and is set when it is issued. It is meant to cover the formalities, not to be driven on for any length of time. Treat the expiry date as a firm deadline.
Can a vehicle be registered by someone who is not resident?
Final registration requires an address in Morocco and the corresponding supporting documents. A non-resident Moroccan living abroad comes under specific temporary admission regimes, to be looked at with customs.
