Where
Local administrative office or consulate

You apply for the Moroccan biometric passport at the local administrative office for the place where you live if you are in Morocco, or at the consulate you come under if you live abroad. The application is paperless: the file is prepared online, then submitted in person for your fingerprints to be taken.

The difficulty almost never lies in the file itself, which is simple, but in the calendar: between May and August, submission slots become scarce and production times lengthen everywhere.

Documents required

  • Application form pre-filled onlineTo be printed and signed after completing it on the national portal
  • Electronic national identity card (CNIE)Valid - this is the document that most often blocks the application
  • Two recent identity photographsFormat and background must meet biometric standards
  • Receipt for the revenue stampMAD 300, paid online or at a public revenue office
  • Old passportFor a renewal, even if expired
  • Declaration of loss or theftOnly for a duplicate, issued by the police

The procedure, step by step

  1. Check that your CNIE is valid

An expired national identity card blocks the whole application. Renew it first if necessary.

  2. Complete the form online

Completing it generates a file number to keep; print the form and sign it.

  3. Pay the revenue stamp

Online or at a public revenue office, depending on what the counter you come under requires.

  4. Submit the application and give your fingerprints

Attending in person is compulsory: fingerprints and photograph are taken on the spot.

  5. Track it, then collect it

Tracking is done online with the file number. Collection is in person, on production of the acknowledgement of receipt.

Cost by situation
Situation Amount Note
First application MAD 300 Valid for 5 years
Renewal MAD 300 Old passport to be handed back
Loss or theft MAD 300 Declaration of loss required
Consular application Local consular fee Processing time generally doubles

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Waiting until the passport expires before acting: many countries require six months of remaining validity to admit you to their territory.
  • Turning up with an expired CNIE - the application is refused, without exception.
  • Using photographs that do not comply: a coloured background, a broad smile or glasses are enough to have the file rejected.
  • Submitting in July for a trip in August. Centralised production does not speed up because you have booked your ticket.

Paying the tax stamp (e-timbre)

Before filing the application, buy the tax stamp online at passeport.ma/Home/EtimbreEnligne. Keep the e-timbre code: it is required to complete the passport application form.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply from abroad?

Yes, at the Moroccan consulate covering your place of residence. The file is comparable, the fees are consular ones and the processing times are longer, since the passport is made in Morocco.

How long is it valid for?

Five years for the standard passport. Check when you submit your application: the periods have changed and vary with the category of applicant.

Can a child have one?

Yes, with the consent and the presence of the legal representative, the child’s birth certificate and the family record book. The child must still attend for the biometrics.

What should I do if I lose my passport abroad?

Report the loss to the local police, obtain an acknowledgement of receipt, then go to the consulate. A laissez-passer can be issued so that you can return to Morocco urgently.
